Recent Purchases

Yesterday I went to Home Goods to buy lamps for a client.  I didn’t find any lamps I wanted but I did not leave empty-handed.  I walked out with a new awesome vegetable knife, some tongs, and a basket–this water hyacinth basket for magazines:

I’m a sucker for a good basket and a good deal and this one was on sale for $10 at our local Home Goods.  My magazines are starting to take over our bedroom so this will help with that.

And I have been on a mission lately to buy more accessories for our house because I have noticed that I pretty much use the same ones over and over again every time I do a photo shoot in the house.  I was going to look for something while at Home Goods but I realized I have a hard time buying little knick knacks unless they are functional, vintage or really personal.    One exception however, would be this little vase I bought recently at Target:

I love how smooth and chalky it is.  I need to put a little flower in it now that the garden is about to start blooming.

Also, the other day while out scavenging for the flea market (did I mention Camille and I are selling at the flea market again in, gulp, 2 weeks!  I am so not ready…) I bought this vintage urn at an antique store.  It is so heavy!  I’m kind of liking the rusty patina too.

Also back on February 26th I ordered this bag, below, from West Elm and am dying to get it.  I desperately needed something cute and durable for samples and supplies and I’m really hoping this will do the trick.  I’ll let you know when it arrives–why does it have to take so long?  I have been so frustrated with West Elm’s shipping lately.  The fabric I ordered from them for the wingback took six weeks!  It’s great fabric though.  Here’s a pick of the bag:

Antiques Faire Countdown

Since I’m headed out of town tomorrow, I’m scrambling to get several last minute projects ready before the flea market next weekend.  I finished fixing up this large vintage mailsorter I found.  It’s in fantastic condition, has casters and would be a great place to store office items, crafting supplies, shoes, wine bottles (thanks for that suggestion Amy!), or even more decorative things.  I rather like the rustic nature of it paired with fine china…

I have to admit, I’m kind of in love with the mail sorter.  If I could find the right place for it in our house I would keep it but so far it hasn’t found just the right spot.   Other items for sale in the photo above include the antique cane chair, the vintage basket holding all the linens, the vintage basket holding the hydrangeas, many vintage table cloths, and the dwell fabric pillows in the basket.  I’ll have other pillows for sale as well.

These chevron striped pillows will be for sale too.  I made these to go with the orange sofa Camille and I found.  You can see it in this post on Camille’s blog.  I also am having a hard time letting go if this antique trunk.  It has casters and the age and patina on it is amazing–I love the brass lock.  Unfortunately one of the hinges is broken and I don’t think I can fix it before next weekend.  So, it may end up coming back home with me anyway if some discerning buyer can’t see through the flaws to how awesome it is!  Also, some more lovely vintage linens.

Chair Before and After

I found this little chair a few weeks ago and have been meaning to fix it up for the flea market.  Today while Becky was taking her nap and the boys were at camp I was able to get to it.

Here it was before:

And after some paint and new fabric, here it is after:

The fabric is a scrap I had left over from a few years ago called Oriental Traditions by Robert Kaufman.  It’s a take on a traditional toile–but done almost like a line drawing.

It was perfect for a little touch of ASCP Olive on the spindles.

This vintage basket will probably be going to the flea market too although I’m having a hard time letting go of it–it has those great rails supporting it on the bottom and it in such good condition.  I’m actually finding that to be the case with a lot of the things I’m supposed to be selling–I really want to keep them!

Thanks for stopping by!

DIY Entryway Organization

 DIY Entryway Organization

As my kids are getting bigger (oldest in first grade this year) I am starting to realize how much better we all need to be about organization.  With homework, after school activities, and play dates ever-increasing, I knew I needed to start to find a system to corral all their stuff.

I also knew I wanted whatever we had to be somewhat cute.  It’s one of the first things people will see as they walk in the front door.  Jackets, books, shin guards, hats, etc. all needed a place to go.

First I bought these large baskets from Cost Plus about a year ago.  I sewed some cloth letters of each child’s initial and attached them to the baskets with twine.  The baskets are pretty deep so so far, not too much of the clutter has been visible.  This could possibly change as they get busier and the stuff grows…

Next, I got an old window at our local salvage yard and screwed these hooks to the bottom (one queen and two kings!).  I found these hooks at a little shop in Tallahassee, FL called Miss Mandy’s but here are some similar ones on Amazon.
